Big news: We got kittens!!!! They are 8 weeks old now and officially cute beyond repair. The boy's name is Familiar and the girl's name is Salem (we went with a witch theme, although neither of the cats are black). For those of you who don't know, a "familiar" (in folklore) is an animal that can change shapes and is like a spirit-animal. Witches always lived with "familiars" (modern echoes of this can be seen in the Harry Potter and Golden Compass books). We thought about naming the boy Winston and the girl Salem, but in the end Familiar was what stuck.
The cats have a great story: We went over to our supervisor's house for a party a few weeks ago and they had these kittens (who were only 5 weeks old at that point!). The mother had been a stray coming around their work. The mom was so skinny they couldn't even tell she was pregnant. Then a few days later they found one of the kittens in the trunk of their car, meowing sadly. It had been separated from its mother for a while (which is why we think the girl has some anxious attachment features). :( Then they searched for other kittens, knowing there would at least be one more, and they found the boy. At this point, they took the mom and two babies back to their house, where the mom nursed them until they were 8 weeks and we adopted them. :)
The great news is that Jack and Diane (the supervisors) offered to pay for all their shots and them getting spayed/neutered. So we got cute kittens for free! And there's two of them-- which just seems perfect for us (in case one day, sadly, we have to part ways). I won't do into elaborate descriptions of their behavior... you can just watch these CUTE videos: :)
