dissertation finished (sort of)

I mailed off my dissertation to the committee... after going through 4 painful drafts w/ my advisor. Of course I still have to defend, and the committee folks will likely have changes for me to make, but for now-- I feel some sense of doneness, if not accomplishment.

This is cheesy but I wanted to thank all of you who have put up with me throughout this process and the larger process of grad school. I think grad school doesn't make for very good friends... in that I know I've had less time to keep in touch with you. :( But I appreciate you all bearing in there with me through this ordeal.

I will spare you the ridiculousness of my whole dissertation but I did want to post on here my dedication and acknowledgement pages...

Dedication

This dissertation is dedicated to my mentor and friend Melissa Himelein, who first enabled me to fall in love with research, and without whose encouragement I probably would have never pursued the bizarre task of graduate school. I also dedicate this work to my father, Jim Mann, for his support and for bringing science into our lives early.

Acknowledgements

First and foremost I would like to acknowledge my advisor, Michael Olson, for taking a chance on a clinical student, for offering his time and extensive knowledge of prejudice research, but most importantly— for his willingness to entertain almost any idea in a fashion that is at once inviting and skeptical. I would also like to acknowledge the members of my committee— Kristi Gordon, Bob Wahler, and Bethany Dumas— for their time and attention to this work. I would like to thank Dan Batson for his important contributions during the research-design phase, and Paula Fite for her statistical knowledge.

I would also like to thank all those who provided essential support and guidance during the process of obtaining my degree, especially: Kristi Gordon, Bob Wahler, Deb Welsh, Marci Burroughs, and Melissa Bartsch.

Finally, I would like to thank Audrey Connor and Jessica Newton for having nothing to do with the graduate world but just being good people.
