Dissertation-Land

I have received my passport to exit Dissertation-Land.  I only have to make a few small changes and get all he luggage/words in order, which will happen by May.

The defense (fri) went very well-- it was even fun! My committee is really awesome and they offered good comments and suggestions, and it felt just like a good intellectual discussion. They weren't "attacking" me or being hyper-critical, as people talk about. In this process I have come to wonder whether dissertation defenses are actually as scary as people say they are or if that's mostly just the graduate-student neuroticism filtering things that way.  Grad students tend to be anxious, defensive types overall and so maybe some people would have experienced my commitee's suggestions as attacks on them.  Or also-- some people have assholes on their committee.

Not me. I am lucky, as it was a great experience and nothing painful. I have thoroughly enjoyed the celebrations of this weekend, also, and wonder how long this high will last before I have to return to completing stupid school papers (3, at least, before the end of the sem) and revising the dissertation.

Ah well, I'll live it up for now. :)
